Royal Gorge

Today’s adventure took us to Royal Gorge, in Canon City, Colorado, home of the world’s highest suspension bridge strung 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River. The bridge carries walking traffic and motor vehicles. We walked across and the views were amazing. Needless to say if you are afraid of heights it’s a little scary. The most spectacular part of the day was a ride at the gorge. It is called the Royal Rush Skycoaster. The ride is perched on the edge of the gorge making it at its peak 1200 feet above the Arkansas River. It’s a huge swing like you see at theme parks the only difference is that it swings out over the gorge. It really is a rush! Kim wouldn’t call it a swing at all ... she described it as "a harnessed suspension lunge over a gorge to make you more scared then you ever have been in your life.”

World's largest rocking chair - on the way to the gorge
The view of the bridge from the "launching pad" of the Skycoaster!
Yes, we all walked across the bridge on the way to the Skycoaster launching pad.

Getting ready to soar over the gorge - notice the family suspended in air behind them, they are getting ready to launch into the air!

Almost everyone is all smiles and excited here - can you tell which two might be a bit nervous?

Okay - can you believe this! Don't worry grandparents, we all made it!
That little black blurb is how far up and out we were flung into the air!

A funny side note:
Each group of three had to choose one child to pull the cord to launch us, Corinne launched Kimberly and Don and they had an amazing ride. They all loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Kendall was suppose to launch Christiana and Kim... except her cord was wrapped around something and so when they yelled, three, two one, pull ... they didn't go anywhere. When she finally pulled it, Kim and Christiana were so scared and screamed very loud. They were glad when their feet finally touched the ground again!

Here we are - it was a great experience!

On the suspension bridge at 1,053 feet!

If a picture is worth a thousand words,
seeing it in person is worth a million!

Did you notice anything different in the post? Today's post is brought to you by Don ... picture comments were by Kim. =)

Don that was very kind of you to take over while Kim recovered. You both are doing a great job. It looks simply AMAZING!!! Kim this is one of the places Samuel wishes we (OR HE) (Sometimes he thinks he's the only one who wants to be with you) Silly kid) could have met you. He says with an unbelivable look in his eye "Their so lucky"... What memories you are making. :)

Was there a special treat at the top of Pikes Peak? Someone told us that there was really good ice cream or other homemade treat at the top.
You guys are totally heroes on our book . . . that trip across the gorge looks like a crazy reality show! We want to hire you as adventure tour guides for another trip! (Andrew - I have more points than you . . . is there a prize? ha ha)
