The Great Divide

On the way to Durango we drove route 160W through the Rio Grande National Forest and the San Juan National Forest – breathtaking! We drove up seven miles to a summit called Wolf Creek Pass. Wolf Creek is a high mountain pass (10,800 feet) with a ski resort at the top. The sign at the top read "The Great Divide" another name for the Continental Divide.

Continental Divide or Great Divide is the name given to the North American portion of the mountainous ridge which separates the watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from, 1) those river systems which drain into the Atlantic (including those which drain via the Gulf of Mexico), and 2) along the northernmost reaches of the Divide, those river systems which drain into the Arctic Ocean.

The decent down to Pagosa Springs is a treacherous 7% grade, which is very steep, with windy hairpin turns, a total drop of some 5000 feet. At the sharpest hairpin turn, there is a scenic overlook where we stopped for a few photos. There we pulled over and saw that our breaks and tires were smoking (they cooled quickly and we had no problems.) The only other vehicle in the small parking lot was a motorcycle. We went toward a cliff and met a friend, Donato, from Kansas City, Mo. We prayed for safety for him in his travel. He was going a very long distance and the signs in the area said that motorcyclist should be extremely careful.

At every turn on this crossing the scenery becomes more and more spectacular and the trip to Durango was no exception.

Hi Kim! Can you let me know what time it gets dark in Durango when you are there? I am trying to figure out when we will be done with Mesa Verde to start our trip up that road to Ouray. I would like for it to be daylight! I guess it does look like from the pictures most of the mountain tops will be green this time of year and not snow capped?!!

great blog! I hope you can save it/print it and have an already made mini memory album when you get back! Blessings to you all! Gerry

Hey! What a great time we had seeing all of you!! We spent Tuesday night in Lincoln, Nebraska and then drove straight through and reached G'burg at 10:30 yesterday morning.

We were just at the same spot you were for those pictures! And our brakes were smoking too! Did you make it to the Sand Dunes?? I should have told you about this great malt shop in Pagosa Springs.

Also, as I was reading the comments, I saw that Gerry is going to Ouray and was asking you about daylight.....she does NOT want to travel on that road at night. It is a road called the Million Dollar Highway and it makes Wolf Creek Pass look like a Sunday drive in the country. It is NOT for the fainthearted. But the views are spectacular and it is worth doing. Hope this little information helps!!

Hey Friends!
We are so blessed that you all are reading our blog and posting comments. It is a highlight to chec`k to see who left us a message!

Gerry, the roads are all two lane, but are 65-70mph, however as Don put it, lots of turns and inclines! We ended up getting into Durango late and it was much more enjoyable driving by day. There is some extended light if it's not stormy so I'd say by 8:45pm it's pretty dark.

Peggy, not much wildlife yet ... we saw elk and buffalo at the Gorge, behind a fence.=) A few horses, not wild (I took some pictures for Samuel.)

We are now in Page, AZ at Lake Powell and will post the amazing Monument Valley picts later.

Hugs to all! xo Kim
