~ 2011 A Milestone Year ~

We're taking a minute to look back and thank the Lord for His amazing grace for our family this year. 2011 has been a year of Milestones and Events ...

In May, Corinne graduated from the Scholars Program at Montgomery College with her Associates in Humanities. This fall she started her Junior year at the University of Maryland, College Park where she is continuing to study History and Secondary Education.

In June, Kendall graduated from Covenant Life School. She had an amazing senior year. One highlight among many included the PVAC Varsity Girl's Basketball Champions. Kendall started her college career in the Scholars Honors Program at Montgomery College this fall.

Christiana turned 13 in July! For two full weeks we had a house of four teenage daughters.
It was a delight! Christiana is spending a lot of time on the volleyball court this year and we're excited for this winter's season.

Corinne celebrated her 20th birthday in August! And our niece Emily relocated to Maryland to start her new career as a Physicians Assistant. We love having another girlie in the house!

September brought yet another Milestone ... Kimberly turned 16! As a Junior this year, she is spending a lot of time supporting the cast of the musical ACTS, as the stage manager for this upcoming Spring production at our church.

We had a much needed family get-away to the beach in October, enjoying mini golf, the waves, and warm weather without a crowd! Peace and Quiet.

And we started out the holiday season with a crazy fun adventure to the Big Apple and watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade again this year!

Yes, a lot of Milestones to celebrate and thank the Lord for His goodness.

The cookies are baked, the house is decorated, the carols are sung, and the gifts are ... almost wrapped...we're getting ready for Christmas! Aimee was a big help with the cookie prep this year...It's that wonderful time of year where we have the joy of writing an update on our blog where we try to summarize all that's happened in a year. We've found that it's nearly impossible. If you take a peek at the side toolbar on our blog, you can scroll through some photo memories of our wonderful European adventure and see some of our "happenings."

This year we are especially reminded of God's goodness in our lives. It's been a year of adventure, traveling, laughter, fun memories, and a time to thank God for His care.

In early fall, Don's mom had a serious fall which fractured two vertebrae in her neck. We are grateful she is at home recovering and that she was able to travel to see Don's brother's family this month. Her continued healing is an answer to many prayers.

If we were to write a long newsie note on the family it would read quite similar to years past, the girls are doing well, by God's grace Don and I are in great health and the Lord has blessed us beyond our imagination.

Instead, we're going to post a link to a message our Senior Pastor, Josh Harris, spoke to us this past Sunday at Covenant Life Church. It is a great message to prepare all of our hearts for this upcoming Christmas. It's entitled, "Simeon's Bucket List." (just click the title to access the message) Simeon and Anna, two faithful servants, teach us what it is like to watch and wait for God's purpose to be fulfilled and how we should see and receive Jesus.

To see Jesus is to see Salvation.

And that is the message of this Holy Season. The reason for this Season of Christmas.

~ Americans in Paris ~

Our Paris adventure began at the Arc de Triomphe ... well, really it began in the subway :) which turned out to be a great experience because the wonderful Jean Clark while in Paris, had pre-purchased our metro cards, picked up a metro map, and gave us instructions on how to navigate the system. We found our stop and as soon as we excited, we looked up and saw the Arc! Wow, what a welcome to Paris! What better way to start a long day in Paris than at a cafe with croissants, on the Champs Elysee's by the Arc...It turned a bit cloudy, but we captured Tower d'Eiffel photos before the rain drops fell...

A little family story ... for Christmas Corinne bought her sisters little trinkets to gear up for our European trip. Luggage tags, necklaces with a suitcase charm, and gift certificates for croissants at cafes, and these charming Eiffel Tower earrings for Kendall to wear in Paris ... :)

Don had us walking all over the city ... up one side of the Champs Elysee and down the other ... from the Eiffel Tower to the Musee Du Louver - believe us, that is a long walk ...

Let's just say it was a lot of walking and seeing beautiful sights ... on our way to the Louvre we saw the American Consulate and took this photo for Brie who was taking wonderful care of Aimee the pup while we were gone. What you can't see in the photo is the security team coming to yell at us and tell us "no photos!" ...

We made it to the Louvre ... it is a bit like the Washington Mall. We felt like we walked from the top of the hill of Arlington Cemetery to the Capital ...

We stopped outside the Louvre for lunch at a Cafe. Christiana's friend who traveled with us, popped out of "Eddie" to see the sights. This is another family story ... Have you seen the movie 'Leap Year'? Well in that movie Amy Adams' Louis Vuitton luggage is named "Louie" so we named our Eddie Bauer backpack Eddie and he traveled along with us. We made sure we never lost sight of Eddie! And we knew if he got dirty we could always, "put him in the wash and he'd be grand!"
There she is, the Mona Lisa... yes that is the best shot we could get of her... not because of the camera issues, but because there are about 100 people gathered around her at all times. There is no personal space in Paris!

It was wonderful seeing some of the famous artists work in the Louvre ...

However it is daunting to try to cover more than one of the buildings ... so instead, we set off for the Cathedral Notre Dame

Just a little more walking ... do you see those twin peaks on the far right in the background?

Our wonderful tour guide has an awesome sense of direction. The first night I took them the wrong direction down the Seine ... but he kept us on track the whole day :)

On our way back up the Seine, we saw the 'Paris Plage' or Paris Beach ... in 2002 the mayor brought in 2,000 tons of sand to create a Paris Beach for the Parisians. It was a funny sight to see right in the middle of the city. But a fun way to end our adventure in Paris. That evening we flew to Dublin!

...: The Normandy Coast of France :...

London's City Airport just started this new air service to the Normandy Coast of France. We flew into Deauville, a small seaside coastal town. It was beautiful! We loved the beach area, the markets, the grand Hotels and the whole area...

The beach was grand ... and the weather was lovely for a stroll on the beach

We stayed at a quaint hotel, Le Patio in Deauville, walking distance to the beach ...

We walked and explored the whole area and had read that you stay in Deauville, but eat across the bridge in Trouville a fishing port. So we walked and saw the beach sights ...My beach bums :)

O.K. - quick story ... so while we were in the UK, the Nikon D40x dropped. It was an accident, but it was not working properly. So, we figured out that it still took very good zoom photos, that the focus was shot on the distance photos, but if we held it just a special way, it worked. So we have some good 'up-close' shots, and from here on out, the distance shots could be a bit blurry and they are definitely a bit crooked ... so just squint and tilt your head a little! :)

Kimberly was the only one who braved the chilly water ... she's my hero for taking the plunge in France! (She's the one in the water :)

Our second day on the Normandy coast we rented a small 'van' - it really wasn't even as big as a station wagon but that's another story ... and we traveled down the coast to the D'day landing beaches. Don did a wonderful job driving, the roads were actually very easy to navigate, everything was really well marked, and we had quite the adventure. With our meats, cheeses, fruit, baguettes, and water in hand, we set-out ...
Our first stop was Pointe du Hoc 4 miles west of Omaha Beach which sits 100 feet on top of the cliffs overlooking the sea. It was the point of attack for the American 2nd Ranger Battalion during Operation Overlord during WWII. --- And that is why we were here. Corinne's dream to see the D'day Beaches of Normandy and stand where the soldiers fought and lost their lives.

We were sobered and silenced by the sight of over 9.300 white crosses representing those buried and remembered for their bravery and sacrifice ...

A quite ride home through adorable quaint French villages was a perfect ending to our day

Christiana woke up ready to explore Brugge for her birthday!
With her buddy Vanessa

When you pop off the train the first thing you come upon is a mountain of bikes ... the preferred mode of transportation.

Some history of Brugge, Belgium ... it is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium - north west of Brussels. It is sometimes referred to as the "Venice of the North" because of its canals. It is beautiful.
The Gothic architecture is stunning

My cousin Susan just happen to be in the neighborhood, well in Amsterdam, and she met us there for the day. It was wonderful having her along!

We took a canal boat tour and the guide pointed out architecture and historical sights.

It was stunning scenery

A little Flemish and a little Dutch We toured the Church of Our Lady and saw the original Modonna of Brugges by Michelangelo - the statue of Mary with baby Jesus. There are ten replicas throughout the city placed on the outside of the buildings to add to the architecture.

We lite a candle and said a prayer ...

And of course saw and tasted the famous Belgian chocolates ... delicious

We couldn't get enough of the sights ... or the frites :) It turned out to be a wonderful day for all of us

And after saying goodbye to Susan and heading back to Brussels... Vanessa blessed Christiana with a wonderful birthday dinner, cake and celebration.

Thank you so much Craig and Jean, Vanessa and the guys for blessings us with a wonderful start on our trip! We loved spending time with you and seeing your life in Europe. We miss you already.

We started our European adventure quite early, 3:30am to be exact on our way to JFK for our International flight. After a quick stop in NJ for breakfast with Pop and Grandma, we arrived at the airport with, well, let's just say a lot of time before check in. And then ... we were on our way Our first stop was Stockel, Belgium - where The Clark's have relocated for a few short years. It was wonderful seeing them and spending time catching up. Stockel is a beautiful, quiet, quaint area right outside Brussels. First off we tried yummy frites - which are like french fries but even more delicious! And some wonderful tarts and treats ...

And then off for a tour of Brussels ... First impressions ... We had a wonderful tour of the Royal Palace (no photos allowed) and we walked all over to see the Cathedral, the Grand Plaz, and the sights of Brussels.

Brussels, Belgium - the capital city of the European Nation. Since WWII, it has become the center of International Politics. Mainly a French speaking nation, with some Flemish. We loved Belgium, and we were spoiled and blessed by our dear friends, the Clarks, from the time we arrived until they escorted us to the train station. Thank you Jean, Craig, Vanessa, Phil, A.C. and Stephen, for your generous hospitality, lavish meals, translating for us (!) and for giving up your beds :)

Hello blogger world! This is Kendall, second oldest of the Glab Girls. This morning i woke up to the very pleasent smell of what Christiana now calls "snow day rolls". Little bundles of dough-y goodness covered in sugar, cinnamon, and butter, baked until golden-brown... oh yes they were quite delicious! And then my dear mother called me to "hurry up and grab the camera to take snow pictures before it all melts!" So i layered up (which now that i think about it wasn't really necessary because it had warmed up to about 45 degrees, yes, that's pretty warm for last 2 months!) and went outside for a nature shoot with the beautiful woods and park land behind my house, and everyone's favorite little pouncing puppy, Aimee :D

...: Christmas Happenings :...

It's that most wonderful time of the year! A perfect time to update our blog with Glab Happenings for our friends and family near and far. The year has been full of laughter, memories, and growing in trusting our Savior and relying on His perfect timing in all of our lives. It's been a year of moving forward...Corinne's last year of high school was filled with wonderful memories, a lot of hard work, and a joyful celebration. Graduation was a special day with many family and friends here to celebrate with us. (See our June post for graduation photos.) Corinne's new adventure into college as part of the MC Scholars has been an exciting challenge. Endless hours of studying, reading, and writing papers - college life. Aside from her academic workload, Corinne has really enjoyed serving on the Admin team for the 10:31 youth ministry at church. Even though her studies take up a lot of time, she still makes room in her schedule for family time -we're glad she's still rooming here with us!

Kendall is a junior this year! The Fall cross country season was a lot of fun and she worked hard to improve her personal times this season! Kendall is taking a load of classes and serving the fifth graders at her school as their art teacher this year. It's a great opportunity to use her gift of creativity! Kendall is playing varsity basketball this winter, although she's been side-lined with three broken fingers for a few weeks, she's looking forward to playing again in January. Kendall also landed a role in this year's Spring musical production "Esther" at our church, which we all know will be an awesome experience! All four of the girls enjoyed summer swim team again this year. This was our tenth summer swimming for the Hadley Farms Sharks! Toward the end of the season, Kimberly noticed her leg was bothering her, after starting to run for the x-country tryouts, and after bruising her knee, we took her in for a check up with the orthopaedic. By God's grace, the x-ray technician happened to take a whole leg x-ray and not just her knee - revealing a rare benign tumor that cracked her tibia bone. (You can read the whole story in our September post.) It's been a trial for her, but Kimberly is making her way through physical therapy and trusting God for the healing of her cracked bone. She is very grateful for her friends who have really encouraged her through the begining of the school year. A freshman this year, Kimberly is working hard and enjoying her high school classes and working on the yearbook.Volleyball - Christiana's new interest has kept her busy this year! (See our May post for her amazing experience at Penn State!) This fall and winter she has continued to play volleyball for the Covenant Life Cougars and for MVSA. And a family milestone - this was our final year in elementary school ... with Christiana starting sixth grade this year! She is doing an excellent job in her middle school classes and is excited to be on the student council this year.

If you recall, we started our year off with our New Years miracle (January post) a close call with a speeding train. That experience has brought us face to face with the reality that every day is an opportunity to trust God for what He has in store for us. Whether it's the missions trip to a violent area of Mexico, uncertain change at work and in our economy, finishing the race of academics well, trusting in broken bones and endless doctors appointments, we have seen God's protecting, caring hand over our family this year.

And this season ... Christmastime ... is a time to reflect, remember and rejoice in our Savior, who stood with us and carried us through this year. He is the reason we celebrate!

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." I found a man who is warm, gentle, an caring, who's there when I need him, and who makes me feel needed, too. I found a man who can be proud of who he is, who is loved and respected more than he realizes. I found a man who is everything a good man ought to be, and the best part is - after I found him, he married me!

... Snicker's Day...

Well ... it's "Snicker's Day" in Maryland, the day named after my dad's favorite candy bar ~ the day we remember when dad went home to be with His Savior... today marks 10 years. And so I thought it would be a great opportunity to honor him ... Karl K. Wilhelm

Dad was one of those dad's you always wanted around... the kind that made most everything an adventure...the one who showed up for all of your games and concerts and cheered and clapped the loudest. The one who had a quick wink and nod for a job well done, and a knowing look when you needed reassurance, and, he was my biggest encourager.

Dad was an avid outdoorsman, a skilled bow, rifle, and black powder hunter and bass master. He brought many "delicacies" home for mom to try out her culinary skills --- venison, turkey, pheasant, goose, perch, bass ... He loved the great outdoors. I'm glad his Lake Trout is hanging on our wall. :) And because of his love for the outdoors, we camped every summer that I can remember ... all summer long. Those are some amazing memories.

An added bonus for me, was dad's occupation -- my high school assistant principal. A guaranteed ride to school everyday, even in the snow and ice ... and more importantly a friendly face just a few doors away at all times. He instilled in us a love for learning, perseverance, hard work, and a love for school and education. Thus -- I have two sisters who have followed in his footsteps... and maybe a few of our girls in the future? I believe high school was a tad bit less of a challenge because he walked through it with me.

We loved dad for his quick wit and funny sense of humor. He loved practical jokes and he almost always had a chuckle and a smile on his face. Dad came up with some of the funniest things to say - okay, who has heard of a "davenport" ?? Dad was a punter for his high school and college football teams and because of this he could kick the top of a door frame in one quick swoop -- always impressive. :) Dad couldn't always carry a tune, but he sang the loudest at church every Sunday... that always made us giggle! And his morning school alarm clock technique still works today -- stir the coffee and clang the mug loudly and they will wake up!

U.S.S. Charles J. Badger DD657 - U.S. Navy, Korean Conflict

Boy do we miss him ... 10 years ago in July, dad had a heart attack. He hadn't been feeling quite himself for a few weeks but didn't want to take the time out of summer fun on the Lake to really get it checked out. Turns out he had a blocked artery that they were able to put a stint in. After more tests, they confirmed that his mitral valve need replaced. Unfortunately open heart surgery didn't work for him, complication occurred during the surgery. Without a properly working mitral valve, your blood doesn't move along as it should and we lost dad just 16weeks later. We weren't expecting it ... he was gone.

I'm so grateful the Lord had him stay with us long enough to meet all of his grandchildren. If you ask me, 10 years is way too long to live without ya dad. But, the Lord knew the plans He had for you, and I am confident that because of Dad's trust in His Savior, he is rejoicing around His throne today.

He saw you getting tired and the cure was not to be,
so He put His arms around you and whispered come to me.
With tearful eyes we watched you , we saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating. Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

Can you imagine coming out of surgery, lying in the PACU and saying, "I don't want to be a burden to anyone" ??? Well, that's our Kimberly. :)

The surgery went very well yesterday. The surgeon had a very busy morning and he was delayed a bit, but she was off to the OR and into recovery very quickly. Unfortunately she has a little bit of the Wilhelm gene in her -- the one that doesn't do so good with anesthesia and pain meds and antibiotics all mixed together. And, her incision was made through some muscle and well as the surgeon told us, when you cut a hole in the bone there is going to be some pain. So we had a "slumber party" at Inova so we could get everything adjusted and make her comfortable. Let me tell you, the nurses and staff there are amazing. We were so well attended to and she received the best of care. After a number of adjustment throughout the night, Kimberly was finally able to get some relief and rest about 4am this morning. She did so well this morning that we were discharge and home by 5pm! She's resting and recooperating, and trying out those crutches.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and especially for your prayers. God was with us every step of the way, directing and leading, preparing and giving her rest.

He is a mighty God ... and we are once again so very grateful!
And ... off to get some sleep ;)

... When you have news and a prayer request to share, blogs are a great thing... We recently found out that Kimberly has two benign tumors in her right tibia.
This fall Kimberly started running on the x-country team at school. Well, trying to run, but it was a challenge because of the pain she was experiencing from shin splints. But, after a fall on her knee, we took her to the orthopedic and found that she didn't have shin splints, instead they found the tumors. God in His kindness worked out every detail and we were able to quickly get an MRI scheduled and then we were referred to a specialist who studies bone and tissue. After a CT scan the doctor was able to diagnose a rare benign bone tumor called a 'solid variant aneurysmal bone cyst.' Basically it's a tumor that is in the cortex of her tibia bone and it has caused her bone to crack, which is why she is having so much pain with it. We are so grateful the tumor can be removed and her bone can be repaired.We are also very grateful for how quickly everything has moved along. A diagnosis in less than a week and surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. We're sorry we haven't been able to get in touch with friends to let them know yet. Thus -- we're grateful for the blog :)

Could you please pray for Kimberly and for our family? We would so appreciate your prayers! Thank you! Throughout this week we are all learning how to wait patiently and lean on the Lord. We'll keep you updated on how her recovery is going. Hopefully she'll be up and moving slowly along by next weekend.

We love you Kimberly. We are so grateful for friends like Susan who prompted us to have your knee checked. We are grateful for orthopedic doctors who order x-rays and technicians who scan the whole leg, not just the knee, so we could see the tumor. We are grateful for your surgeon who took two extra years just to study bone and tissue so that he could tell you what was going on with your leg. This year Vanessa was visiting from Belgium, so we had two for breakfast :) Christiana decided on a "Princess Pampering" day for her birthday. She only gets away with stuff like this because she has three older sisters who love to spoil her :) ...

Okay ... it's Summertime! And the blog took a back seat to life happening at the Glabs. But now we have some fun photos to share - here's our update ...Swim team dominates summertime ... up early for practices and meets ...

... Kendall rocked the league in breast stroke this year ... ... Kimberly had a fun season swimming tons of events in two age groups... ... Christiana joined her sisters this year for the end of the season GGSL Invitationals! ... Way to go girlies!
... Corinne had an awesome season as assistant coach and swimming her final year as a senior ...... we loved hanging out with all of the HFS families ...

... Kendall held an art camp for two weeks this summer - it was a great experience ...

Along with all of the above, we've been running around to volleyball camp, having friends over, going for ice cream at Jimmy Cone and Brusters and getting all that summer reading in! There's been the amazing Worthy09 youth retreat and Christiana and Corinne both celebrated birthdays! (Those posts deserve their own slots -- coming up next!) Now we're running to fall sports tryouts and getting everything in line for school ... Amazing grace!

It's been an event-filled summer! And now it's time to enjoy the few short sunsets we have left before a new season meets us!

While the rest of the fam was off serving in Mexico, my sister Karla and my nephew Matthew came to visit ...

We had a fantabulous time!!! We filled every day with activities from morning to night! First up was the slip-in-slide in the backyard ...
Lots of fun creating and slipping away ... I think these photos are the funniest ones of the weekend ...

Fun times ... Next up was a pounce in the back woods with the pup ...

It was a beautiful day ... I call it "New York weather" I think they brought it with them ...We found some vines for swinging ...

After we saw Night at the Museum II on Wednesday night, we headed to DC on Thursday ... First stop ... the zoo

It was an amazing trip to the zoo. It was absolutely perfect weather and all ... all ... all ... of the animals were out! This baby girl was taking a stroll with her momma ... The octopus was simply amazing. We hung out at her tank for quite awhile while the zoo keepers replaced her toy, fed her and we watched her habitat...

The cheetahs were out and about ...

And it just happened to be the baby Panda, Tai Shan's birthday. All three pandas were enjoying the birthday cake...

We loved watching the silly seals ...
Things got a bit silly with the cousins...

And I just loved having sister time ...After the zoo ... we took a crazy tour around D.C. Do you know that if you are on the Mall, and you turn at the 9th street tunnel, you end up crossing the bridge into Virginia on 395!? Oh my ... we saw all four sides of the Washington Monument ... not on purpose... But it was a fun tour via the SUV and we were able to stop at the Lincoln Memorial and get fun t-shirts. Thanks for putting up with my crazy city driving!

The week was filled with yummy trips for dinner, campfires and 'smores, cousin time with our cousins and aunt who are in town, crab picking and seafood, and of course a jeep ride to Jimmy Cone! We couldn't have asked for better weather or a more wonderful visit...

Do you know what happens each Memorial Day Weekend at Penn State?? It's taken over by volleyball players! For Christiana it was a weekend to remember! The MVSA Comets met at Penn State ready to work hard, play lots of volleyball and have a lot of fun! We started out Friday night with a pizza party ...

Then an awesome opportunity to meet the two time NCAA Women's Volleyball Champs ...

We were up early Saturday morning and the girls were ready to play at 8:00 a.m.

Six games and three matches later ... it was 1:30pm and time for some fun!Diving board and platform diving fun! After a good night sleep ... the girlies were back on the court bright and early at 8:00 a.m. Sunday! Good luck to our competition ...This was the most exciting game of the season ...The team played a great game ... They kept their spirits up ...And came up victorious with a win 29-27 !!! It was awesome to watch!
After another long day of play ... time for some team fun! Team picture on the Nittany Lion and off for a fun dinner Monday morning the girls participated in a clinic with some of the Penn State Team ... It goes without saying ... it was way cool!

SNOW DAY!!! ...
It snowed and snowed last night ... We measured over 8 inches on our back deck ... The girls took Aimee out for a walk in the woods ... Aimee loves the snow ... she had a great time running, jumping and pouncing in the woods with her girls ... The girls were out there forever ... and then came back and shoveled - thanks girls, what a blessing! Hot cocoa and a quiet day at home ...A fun and restful snow day!

So .... It's been a bit crazy and busy here at 4522 Happenings ... we've got lots to update you on ... Back in December ... yes, way back then, Christiana and her 5th grade class hosted their annual Medieval Feast. It was our 4th Feast and we all had a most wonderful time! Christiana completed a model of a Medieval Castle and she did an outstanding job on her project and an A++ on her report! Way to go girlie!In late December, we headed to NYC with the Mays girls and had a wonderful adventure. We saw their cousin in her Off-Broadway debut in "Dear Edwina." She did an awesome job! We enjoyed dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant in Little Italy, La Mela, thanks to my wonderful hubby. Kendall blessed us by taking photos of the trip ... you'll notice a different artistic view of things :) ... We visited Ground Zero and Trinity church ... Headed to the awesome World Store at Build-a-Bear, shopped at American Girl and Journey and Quiksilver ...Jean and I got pretty good at hailing two cabs at once to haul our crowd around ...We visited Time Square and had an yummy lunch at Hard Rock Cafe ...
It was a blast!!! Next?? Well ... along came January ... and ... Basketball took over!Kendall played for the CLS Varsity Girl's Cougars! ( i luv her ponytail in this picture :) They had an awesome season ... Champions of the PVAC North Division ... and they made it to the semi-finals in their tournament...Way to go Kendall!!! ... We are so proud of the many, many hours you put into practice and participating on the team. Determination ... Perseverance ... Faithfulness...

Kimberly returned to the middle school Lady Cougars! She had an excellent season as well ...

She enjoyed being back on the team after taking last year off ... (p.c. Kendall :)

Your season was full of ... Patience ... Perseverance ... Servanthood ... Fun memories ... we are so proud of you!!
Next up .... Christiana and Volleyball! ...C~anna is loving Volleyball ... it's been a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun! ...(i luv their socks!)She's been playing in a few tournaments and really learning the game... ... and hanging out with friends :) Way to go little one!

... Five Miles from Home ...

By saying this:
A Great Book ~ and ~ An Amazing God ~ A Great Book ~

I surprised Don with a book for Christmas. Not just any book, a book by Drew Jones .... "Five Miles From Home ...and other exotic travel destinations, is a travel book about not traveling, or more correctly, not traveling far from home. It is not a book of lists of specific local things to do ..., rather it is a book about learning to enjoy what is nearby, whatever those things might be." Drew's wife Diane is Corinne's Literature teacher and we respect their family so much for their example of true love and sacrifice. Here is another excerpt from Drew's book ... " The seed for the book was born over 20 years ago with my son Reid. His disabilities and medical needs were so intense that traveling became very difficult for us. When his conditions became so acute that nurses or nursing homes were required for any time away, the possibility of significant travel evaporated." Drew's book is a great resource and an inspiration.

So Don started reading it Christmas morning (that's the book he was reading on the deck - previous post) and decided to use it for an idea on New Year's Day for family time. His idea? A family photo shoot contest. ~ An Amazing God ~

Corinne and Kimberly received Nikon Coolpix S550 digital cameras for Christmas and the other girls had cameras so we divided into two teams of three, had two hours to shoot photo's and we had to stay within a radius of "Five Miles from Home." Are you ready for an amazing story? It's a long one ... Corinne, Christiana and I headed to the Agriculture Park for some fun shots ... And then traveled around a few fields and churches ...
Don and Kendall and Kimberly headed north ... Toward MC and a beautiful forest ...

Above: a beautiful reflection ... Below: not such a beautiful picture - but an interesting shot of a bullet riddled old car with graffiti...Next, the two C's and I headed to Washington Grove to take a few pictures at the railroad tracks. They both got some cool shots of the tracks ... Out of nowhere, a silver car raced up to the tracks and a man quickly got out of the car. He asked us, "Has the Amtrak train come through yet?" In my pride I thought, would we be standing here on the tracks if a train were coming? What I said was, "no." He replied, "Well, when you see the train lights you have about a minute until it's here." And he drove off ...A very few minutes later, thankfully we saw the train light - I don't think it was even a minute before it came hurling past without even slowing down. The girls and I had quickly scurried over toward the car, but the rush of wind was harsh on our faces. I was so extremely grateful for that stranger's warning. We all were a bit weak in the knees and got in the car. At that moment I wanted to talk to Don, but I was a bit shaken up so I asked Corinne to call him and see what they were doing. He had left his cell phone at home, so we called Kendall's phone and he answered. He kept the call really brief and told Corinne he had to keep an eye on the girls and had to go. When she hung up I asked her what they were doing? Corinne said that he couldn't talk, he had to keep an eye on the girls - we didn't know where they were or what they were doing ... I told Corinne to call him right back and tell him that there was a train that is going north - very fast - and if they were anywhere near a railroad track they need to watch out.We didn't know where they were, but I felt such an urgency to call them. Don, Aimee the pup and the two K's were north, five miles north ... on the tracks walking onto a bridge, a railroad bridge, on an overpass, without a quick way down...When we called, they were walking on the tracks to the bridge. They were in the middle of the bridge when Don saw the light from the train in the distance. He yelled to the girls and they all ran very quickly off the tracks ... with less than a minute to spare before the Amtrak train came rushing past.

A very few minutes later, Kendall called and said, "Thank you for calling and warning us. We were on the tracks." How did we know? We didn't ...

He is an Amazing God ... to prompt my heart so strongly to call Don back and warn him. Was the man in the silver car an angel of the Lord? Our God sent that stranger to save us - all six of us, from the same train.

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;" Psalm 91:11

When we all returned home, we hugged and talked a lot about God's amazing grace in our lives on New Year's day ... and as for the photo's ... the girls took over 400 photo's that day. I posted the finals throughout this post, and this last one, by Corinne, was our winner.

May the Lord continue to show His amazing kindness to you throughout this New Year! He is indeed amazing ... He is faithful ... We are so remarkably grateful.

Okay ... so my good friend JeanBean tagged us in a silly blogging game. According to her rules, once you've been tagged, you go to your sixth picture folder, find your sixth photograph and blog your memories of the photo. Well.... we have a sad computer story. Yep, I don't have a sixth folder right now. You see ... I was working hard on the cruise photo's (see former October posts) and we transferred all of my picture folders to an external hard drive. Well, me and the hard drive were sitting at the kitchen table, and ---bang --- it was knocked to the floor. And apparently, those external hard drives are very delicate creatures, because ours broke. So for now, I went to my first file folder and grabbed the sixth picture .... Christiana ... on her first ever volleyball team! She played this fall for the "Glowing Bananas" a MVSA rec team. Her coaches Missy and Christine, two local high school girls, guided the Glowing B's to first place. And when they played the end of the season tournament, they won! And so, our little one is hooked on volleyball. She tried out for their club team and made the 12 and under team. She is very excited about this new adventure.

So in my sixth photo - Christiana is posing with her volleyball, her first place medal and in her Glowing Banana uniform. :) We've sprouted out of the basketball shell! Maybe there's another "spiking viking" (my former high school team!) in the making!

We've had many "happenings" over here ... Over Thanksgiving break, Kristen took pictures for us. She took a ton of pictures! We loved seeing them on her blog and loved them even more when she delivered them today! Yeah! She is an outstanding photographer and I can't believe almost five years has gone by since she first photographed the girls with her brand new camera as she started her brand new career. Oh my! Thank you Kristen for taking such great photos for us ... I've already picked out the Christmas card photo, some frames for the house and can't wait to pick some frames for Don's office. ...

These girlies have been pretty busy (and keeping us busy) as well ... Christiana is playing for the 12 and under MVSA volleyball team, Kimberly is playing for Coach Cates' CLS Middle School Cougars, Kendall is playing her first year of Varsity basketball for CLS, and Corinne is completing college applications - yes, can't believe it - oh my!

... So we really enjoyed this little break from school, sports, and life ...
... we had tons of fun, giggles and laughter, and we made more memories ... thanks again Kristen!

A fun tradition is apple and pumpkin picking ...

And it's been our tradition to visit Rock Hill for apples and pumpkins. The girls have visited here on field trips, and we've come as a family to pick yummy apples!

Aimee went with us this year (it was her birthday weekend!) After gathering the Macintosh and Empire's we headed to the market to find a pumpkin ...
Too many to choose one ... After picking apples and pumpkins all these years at Mr. Biggs Orchard, we asked him for a quick picture It was a very fun fall day! The Cruise - Finale

Our next stop was St. Maartin. We docked on the Dutch side of the island and took a water taxi into Philipsburg for a day of shopping ...

I handed the camera over to Kendall for the day and she captured some beautiful shots ...
We met Olivia and the gang shopping ... We loved these pointy brown shoes... Thank you Don for taking us shopping in the Dutch West Indies! I love the mischievous look on Pop's face ... and the love that you two share ... it was such a blessing to spend a whole week with you guys! After a day in St. Maartin ... we had another fun go-around with formal shots on the spiral staircase ...So after the fun formal shots ... Corinne and Kendall talked me into walking around the ship taking "funny formals" ... they had me cracking up ... I love how expressive Kendall's eyes are and Corinne, you're such a goof-ball! Our last day in St. Thomas we relaxed on the beach in Frenchman's Reef ... View from our balcony on the ship ... We played in the surf and went snorkeling ... thus the beach chairs are empty ...

No problems on our trip home ... just a wonderful direct, nonstop flight on United! We tried to get some studying in ... and we were very grateful for our spacious rooms when we got home! That's a wrap ... we had an amazing trip!

The Cruise - Part II

The first day at sea was awesome! There was so much to do on the ship we could never capture every moment... swimming in the pools, relaxing in the hot tub... oh yeah and the fun stuff too... shopping, walking around the massive ship, playing basketball, and wall climbing!

We had a special gathering that evening to celebrate the reason we were there ... Pop and Mom's 50th Anniversary ...

In the beginning there was Joe, Mom, Mary, Pop and Don

Moving right along .... the next morning was our first stop ...
Off to "Surf Barbados" ... we met Barry outside the 'round about' with the big tree... drove across the island which was gorgeous and got busy surfing ...Refresher course ...

We all had a very fun time at the beach ... riding banana boats, para-sailing and watching the locals sell their wares ...

While some were para-sailing and making the rest of us a bit nervous whether or not they would make it back in time ... the local hat maker entertained us ... We made it back to the ship in plenty of time ...
Antigua ... Don and Kim's favorite Island ... We traveled here 21 years ago for our honeymoon ... it was just as beautiful as we remembered

The Cruise!!! Part I

Oh where to start??? Once again we've taken tons of photo's of our adventure ... I guess we should begin at the beginning!

Saturday morning we started out very early in a terrible thunderstorm ... We made it to the airport and boarded the plane ... We were on our way to Miami, in the vicinity of Mickey Mouse when we felt a bit of a jerk and the lights and power went out in the cabin. Hmmm ... this didn't seem good. In a few short minutes the pilot was telling us he had good news and not so good news. When we left Dulles, our jet had two out of three working generators. He assured us that two was fine to travel with, however, number two just blew and we had to make an emergency landing in Orlando because we had just one generator left. So, to make a very long day, I mean story, short ... we landed safely in Orlando, had a four hour delay, flew to Miami, and then really, miraculous made it on a flight to San Juan and arrived in Puerto Rico just six hours late.

Here's the departure sign we watched in Orlando. Do you notice the Miami - should be leaving at 9:30am - now leaving at 12:40pm? There were two more updates ... we left around 2:00pm! Here are a few shots from the airport ... what do you do when your flight is delayed, and delayed, and delayed ... Find a Starbucks!!!

And start your homework!!!

We made it to San Juan just in time to have dinner with the family! The next morning, this is the view we had out our window ....Our day at the Marriott was beautiful and relaxing! And then we ventured to the pier and found our "home away from home" for the next week ... Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Sea! We toured the ship and had a yummy first dinner on board before cruising out of Puerto Rico.

Here are most of the twenty-six! And that's post number one! We'll post part two tomorrow ... next up - the first day at Sea and Barbados!

We are having an awesome time! Thanks to everyone for praying for a safe trip and wonderful weather ... so far so good! We had a special Anniversary Celebration yesterday and Pop and Mom Glab were surprised! We've had fun days at sea and wonderful stop in Barbados today - s.u.r.f.i.n.g!!!! So much fun! Here's a picture from our day surfing! They all did a great job and were able to catch many waves! And ... a beautiful sunset from our balcony. Greetings to all from the blue waters!!!

Twenty-six Glab family members will be sailing through the Caribbean in honor of Pop and Mom's 50th wedding anniversary. We are so blessed to be able to take time to spend with our family! Please pray for good weather, a safe trip, and for Don's parents to be honored and blessed as we celebrated this remarkable milestone. Bon Voyage!

School has started! I "interviewed" the girls on their upcoming school year ...
I'm looking forward to the Medieval Feast in December! I'll be writing a huge subject report and making a project as well. I think I'm going to pick "castles!" I can't wait! (5th Grade)I'm excited to be in 8th grade - my last year in middle school. I'm really glad I made the soccer team this year - and we even won our first game! I'm looking forward to studying the Colonial time period in American History.

The joys of school and graduating!!!!! I think this year is totally going to be an awesome year - I can't believe I'm a Senior! I'm so excited I'm working on the year book and I'm on student council. I love my class and my crazy schedule! Covenant Life School is celebrating their 30th anniversary ~ amazing! We are so grateful for the teachers and administrators and staff that have so faithfully served us the last 13 years. On the first day of school, they invited the parents to attend a school-wide prayer meeting to start off the year. It was a wonderful time of thanking God and praying for the school year. Wow! Excited to see what is in store for all of us!

~ ~ We Remember September 11th ~ ~

Over the last few days, we've been talking about September 11, 2001. We remember a lot from that day. Don was working in Frederick at the time and Christiana (3) and I were at home. Corinne (5th grade), Kendall (3rd grade), and Kimberly (1st grade) were all at school. I remember talking to my mom, who was just getting ready to leave N.Y. to come to our home for a visit. I remember taking Christiana over to Sue and Alan's while I ran to Safeway for all of us - for water... and then running over to pick up their kiddos and my girls from school. On our way home, a fighter jet was passing our neighborhood. He had been circling the 18 mile radius around the White House - right over our house. We could see him in the cockpit. By God's amazing grace, September 12th came ... we were all safe in our homes. Touched by the loss of life and the tragic events in New York, at the Pentagon and the crash sight of flight #93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, just 11 miles from where my dad's family still calls home.

So as we observe the seventh anniversary of September 11th, we're praying for comfort for all of those that lost a loved one that day. We are so grateful for and we are praying for those that have been protecting us from further attacks these last seven years, and for those that are serving our country today.

Yes ... another summer birthday in our family. We love to celebrate birthdays ... and the 13th is a very special one! How did you get to be 13 Kimberly!?

Well ... sit back and get comfy because this post is a long one ...

For the girl's first birthday as a teenager we spend an afternoon together. Kimberly chose D.C. as her location for her day out!

First stop ... shopping in Georgetown ...

(This picture is a bit blurry because the owner of this tiny little shop was yelling at me to stop taking pictures and he startled me!) We had lots of fun walking around Georgetown looking and shopping! ... and taking some fun pictures
... what special birthday shopping trip would be complete without a little special chocolate!?
Next up was a quick driving tour of D.C. and our favorite monuments ...

One of her favorite places in D.C. is the park right by the airport. So we went to watch the airplanes take off...

Have you heard of the Annapolis 10 mile run?

The beginning of this story began a few years ago ... well, more than a few ...

As my mom always said ... Just look at those "little peanuts" ...

At three and five, these little sweeties ran the Germantown Oktoberfest fun run with their Dad...Don has run seven (7!) marathon races (26.2 miles each!) and too many 5K's, 10K's and half marathon's to count ... That is simply amazing to me. Over the years, as he's trained and ran, Don has looked forward to the day the girls would join him in a race ...
A few years ago, as a summer goal, they completed the Kid's Marathon program, running and walking 26.2 miles throughout the summer ending with a 3k race in September ...

Fast forward to this summer's goal ... Those two "little peanuts" joined their dad for the Annapolis 10 mile run on Sunday!

... and they all did an awesome job! The girls started their second year on the school's x-country team. Running in their dad's footsteps ... "I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life." Proverbs 4:11-13

Corinne's birthday started out a little different this year ...

Her senior class was having a fundraising event ... a car wash at the local McDonald's. She woke up bright and early, and was off to wash cars...Corinne and Will share the same birthday and Will's family brought yummy cakes to celebrate! Thank you!!!

Yes, they were ordered in plenty of time, but the Lord and the UPS man thought their timing was the best timing ... so after the girls sat down for tea, the doorbell rang (thank the Lord!!!)
... and it all arrived in time ....

Sunday - Back in the USA

They're back in the U.S.A. .... This afternoon was a tearful good-bye as the crew left Rancho 3M. Hugs and tears and prayers after their morning church service.

We received a text from Don around 12:50pm that they were on their way to Cattlemen's... They were back in the States around 1:10pm and getting ready for lunch! After a relaxing and very enjoyable "amazing" lunch, they headed for a "cowboy market" and then to the hotel in El Paso.

We are so glad you are safely back across the border. We can't wait to see everyone at the airport tomorrow! We'll follow-up with more candid photos and a post from Don when they get home! Stay tuned for more pictures. Thank you to everyone who has been checking the blog and praying for the team.

This morning ... at the foot of the cross ... The crews spent their last work day giving it their all ... The playground crew finished their job! It's awesome!!! It's unconfirmed ... but the amazing fence crew has broken Mr. Layman's record and they put in over 40 poles yesterday!!! To break records you need energy!!! ...

Tomorrow ... their schedule includes a church service in the morning with Dean's church... off to Cattlemen's for a late lunch - can you imagine how many "Cowboy" 2lb steaks will be ordered?

Did you know that Cattleman's was on the Food Network as the top steak house in the USA!!! We saw a great episode a few weeks ago - how cool is that!? Hello Everyone,
Yesterday (Thursday) was another great day. The teens worked hard and with great attitudes. They have done so well we decided to make last night movie and ice cream night as a way of honoring them and saying "well done."

We also took time last night to honor 8 youth for the way they have been serving above and beyond what is expected. Along with honoring them (with words and candy) we honored Jann Allen. She is our official Silent Super Mom! She is quietly at work cleaning bathrooms, painting, preparing food, cleaning the kitchen and doing so many other small things that we cannot keep track.

Emily told me that this morning Corinne, Janelle and Brielle went into the girls dorm and made up everyone's bed, straightened up all of the suitcases and organized all of the clothes and shoes. This was a big surprise blessing for the girls. (I doubt this will happen in the guys dorm!) Another example of serving beyond the call the duty.

In VBS yesterday Ally had the children do a relay race obstacle course that was so much fun to watch. The children were so excited as they took their turn running through the maze. The children walk around each morning asking if it is time to start yet. That’s it for now. Thanks for your continued prayers. Matt

Thursday - Back to Work - The Rain Stayed Away

This morning's devotions lead by Andrew ...After the rain came ... frogs - tons of frogs all over the place.

The kids enjoyed the rain and the water left behind ...

And the work crews were back at work ...

The fence crew is determined to break the record number of fence poles placed ...

And tonight ... the teens will most likely hang out again in the "sombrero" where they'll play cards and guitars just like last night ...
We chatted with Don for about five minutes tonight - it was 6:30pm Guadalupe time and the crews were cleaning up for the day. It was a long day of work for everyone. The rain held-off and they were able to get a lot of work done again today - Thank you Lord.

Wednesday in Mexico - Rain!

The weather changed a bit today ... This mornings update from Matt:
Hey guys, thanks for praying for us. We had a great day yesterday. This morning I was able to really encourage our youth for the way they worked yesterday. We got a lot done...especially for the first day. Usually there is a learning curve day one but yesterday was more like a day three or four. Our youth have great attitudes and are serving with joy. So far they have been nothing but impressive. Ally continues to do a great job with VBS. Yesterday went very well. ... Chris Porter lead group devos this morning and did a great job. Neil lead us in worship. It is actually cool here (75 last night!) We got some rain too. Today is going to get up to 83! The rest of the week has a high of 85! Dean said it never goes below 100 this time of year. The rain hatched a batch of mosquito's so pray that we don't get too bit. Thanks for your prayers, Matt
From Don this evening...
The rain has been pouring down all day with flash floods. Dean thinks this is the most rain they have had in a year. The Internet has been down most of the day so more pictures will come later.

One of the boys on the ranch was very seriously hurt on the playground and was taken into Juarez to be treated - one of the boys who lives at Rancho 3M, not one of our youth. Please keep him in your prayers.

Work was stopped today - Please pray for the weather to clear and the waters to subside so that the work can continue.

Yesterday's Travels and Today's Hard Work

Yesterday's Travels went well... a few misplaced bags, but all is well ...Arriving in El Paso ... Heading to Rancho 3M. . .Dean gave them a tour of the property, their home for the next week.

Morning Devotions - todayWorks crews were divided up into the fence crew - welding, painting and putting in the poles. One crew is rebuilding and painting the playground, and yet another crew is running the Vacation Bible School and camps. . . They have been working hard . . . Don's update:
We had a very good evening last night and have gotten much work done today. The kids and our teens had a fun evening of running around, playing basketball and soccer. The Janelle Mays - Krista Minetree team had a little trouble but everyone else is working well together - Captain Corby Mergorden has his troops working with precision on the fence line.

Prayer requests ... Please continue to pray for the work that is being done - construction work and the work in the hearts of the children at Rancho 3M.

Mexico 08` has arrived

They're off! The team of youth, pastors and three parents are on their way to Rancho 3M. Arriving bright and early at CLC at 630a.m. - they traveled by bus to BWI. Please pray for their safety as they cross the boarder in El Paso, TX and venture to Guadalupe, Mexico. Don texted around 9:30am to say they were all boarding the plane.

We'll miss you all - but as Mr. Porter prayed today... Lord bless all of those who are serving, those who are going and those who are sending.

UPDATE From Don: The team boarded around 9:30am and arrived safely in El Paso around 2:50pm. They had lunch and crossed over the boarder which was "uneventful" and toured Rancho 3M around 6:30pm our time (EST.) Everything is going very well. There is much work to do and only four days to complete it. Please pray for the work crews. Everone is looking forward to a very full week. The weather was nice -in the 90's.

We Love our Daddy!

A Tribute to our Dad ... Happy Father's Day ... We love you!!!! Christiana - "I love Daddy because he is manly, cuddly, and whenever we do something wrong he corrects us in a loving way."

Kimberly - "I love my dad because he loves me, he loves to play sports, he encourages me to try my best in whatever I do, and he trains me in godliness."

Kendall- "My dad not only helps me to grow in godliness, but encourages me to strive in all that I do. One example is his dedication to wake me up at 5:00 a.m. to practice basketball with me because he knows how much we both love it!"

Corinne - "My dad is the best because he loves me, provides for me, and cares for my soul like no one else in my life. He is the wisest man that I know and I love him sooo much!"

Aimee our pup - "I love Daddy because he goes pouncing with me in the woods and he lets me sleep on his head."

Our Daddy is a very wise man. Not only is he wise in Christ, but he is wise with his resources, his time, and his talents. He uses everything he has for the glory of God. And by doing this he cares for his family and loves all of us (even Aimee) with all of his heart. We are weak but he is strong and he holds us up when we are falling down. He teaches us about God and trains us in a path of righteousness so that when we are grown we can be half as wise as he is.

He also sacrifices so many things to spend time with us and to provide for us. He spends so much time with us ... taking us to the Nats games, on special dates, to the movies, coaching our basketball teams, cheering us on at swim meets, leading our care groups, going on missions trips to Mexico and summer youth retreats and blessing us with huge vacations. He cares so much for us and loves us with all of his heart. We are so grateful for the dad that God has given us and he is the best Dad in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!

Catching Up!

My goodness ... a zillion things have been going on since our last post! While we've been working on our home improvements, the girls have been busy with tons of events - in school and out! Christiana's 4th grade class had an exciting field trip to Gettysburg
We toured the battle fields, walked where the soldiers marched, sat atop 'Little Roundtop' and even climbed in 'Devil's Den.'
Next up, the elementary classes at CLS presented their Spring Concert ... Christiana's class did an outstanding job with "How Beautiful." Corinne's class went off to D.C. for their history class field trip ...

Christiana and Kimberly celebrated another year in GEMS (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior) our mother/daughter club at church.

And we've been to a few more Nat's games ...

Don took them to meet Screech the mascot ...
And they made it to the big screen!

Which brings us to Friday ... the girls from Christiana's class gathered at our home for a farewell party for their classmate. Vanessa and her family are moving overseas for a season. Although we will miss her terribly, we know that time will go by so quickly and before we know it, she'll be back ...
(Side note: notice Canna's cast is off! Right before the party we had her final doctor's appointment and removed cast #2! Yeah!)

Vanessa - we love you! We will all be praying for your families new adventures ...

Tumble, Fall ... and a Pink Cast for Christiana

Hi ... Christiana here ... I was outside at recess on Friday, and I was running on the black top and just when I was about to finish a mile ... all of a sudden I tripped and fell!Mommy came and we went to see Dr. Niu (he's the best - we got there right at his lunch break) and then we went to get an x-ray which showed I had a buckle fracture ... then we couldn't find a bone doctor (orthopedic) that could see us before TUESDAY ... so we stopped and prayed, and called my friend Evelyn's mom (she's needed a bone doctor before too!) We saw Dr. Murphy (thank you Aunt Jean for the recommendation) and made it home before dinner! I was very tired, my arm was hurting, and I was very hungry (that's why mommy picked the rumbly in my tumbly song from Pooh! :) When Daddy got home, everyone signed my cast - he signed it the biggest!So... I've been resting and taking it easy this weekend, and I have a new bright pink cast for the next four weeks. I'm not sure how all of this writing is going to work, but we'll figure it out! And, it's a little itchy but the doctor said if it itches to tap it with a spoon! Isn't that a silly idea?
